Violin Teaching Strategies

Teaching Strategies is a 10-hour pilot course created by the SAA and will be open to any violin teacher who is enrolled in the Suzuki Violin Unit 2 course this summer at ASI or who has taken Violin Unit 1 or beyond in the past.  Teachers can take the class in conjunction with any violin teacher training Units-10 ; it will be held during hours that can accommodate both courses. The cost for the class will be $200;175 if it is taken in conjunction with a teacher training Unit.

Event Description

This course will feature guided practice-teaching segments, role playing and hands-on practicum-like activities to help teachers improve their teaching. The purpose of the class is to give ideas to make teaching better. There is no observation required at ASI beyond the 10-hour class.

Prerequisite: Teachers must have completed Violin Unit 1 or be enrolled in Unit 2 at ASI.

Preparation: The teachers should bring a DVD lesson clip from their studio that shows a Book 1 or 2 student for feedback in the class.

Registration: Teachers need to register for the class as an enrichment course.

Cost: $200 if taken by itself; $175 if taken in conjunction with Violin Unit 2 or beyond.

Trainer Information

Pat D’Ercole

Patricia D’Ercole is a Suzuki violin teacher and teacher trainer. She did long-term training with Margery Aber and studied with Dr. Suzuki. She has been a clinician in 23 states and 7 foreign countries. Pat has written numerous articles for the ASJ, was chair of the SAA Board of Directors, and a member of the Every Child Can! and Suzuki Principles in Action Committees. She was the founding president of the Suzuki Association of Wisconsin and has been co-coordinator for the International Research Symposium on Talent Education since 1995. Through her leadership, a collection of videos which chronicles Dr. Suzuki’s teaching at the American Suzuki Institute in 1976, is now preserved on the web. Pat created the UWSP Suzuki Strings Mentoring Program, a year-long online mentoring program for Suzuki teachers. Most recently, Pat is the Director Emerita of the Aber Suzuki Center at the UW-Stevens Point.
