Event Description

Duration: 15 hours of course time—timing below includes lunch breaks and observation times.

Class Dates:

  • Sat. Oct. 28 (4-7pm) / Sun. Oct. 29 (10am-4:30pm)
  • Sat. Nov. 11 (4-7pm) / Sun. Nov. 12 (10am-4:30pm)
  • Sun. Dec 3 (10am-4:30pm)

NOTE: The registration deadline for Unit one is two weeks before the start dates listed above. All audition materials for Unit 1 Courses must be submitted 10 days prior to course start. Please click here to visit the SAA website for the requirements of the audition video tape.

Unit 2 Topics will include:

Teacher participants pursue the development of the young pianist through the study of traditional children’s piano literature. Participants continue to discuss how to assist parents to help the student practice effectively at home. The transition of learning by ear to reading music continues;
teacher participants learn how this unfolds in Unit 2.

About the Instructor:

Gail Lange, B.A, M.A, A.R.C.T.

Gail Lange’s career as a Suzuki piano teacher is centred in Guelph, ON. Since becoming a teacher trainer in 1984, Gail has made it a point to observe outstanding teachers. She spent 4 months in Matsumoto working with Drs. Suzuki and Kataoka, and short periods in studios of the late Doris Koppelman and Bruce Anderson. Gail has had the opportunity to observe master classes conducted by Leon Fleisher, Menahem Pressler and the late Claude Frank.

Gail has an active studio with students from ages 4 to 18; her students have won many awards and distinctions. Many excellent Ontario Suzuki teachers have trained in her studio where she currently offers teacher workshop courses at all levels. Also active in Suzuki organizations, Gail has completed two terms on the Board of the Suzuki Association of the Americas(SAA), is a Past-Chair of the Suzuki Association of Ontario, served as Piano Coordinator for the 2008 SAA Conference held in Minneapolis and is a facilitator of Suzuki Principles in Action (SPA) created by SAA. Most recently, Gail chaired the committee which revised the Suzuki Piano Pedagogy Syllabus for all Units. Currently, Gail is on the SAA Teacher Development Committee.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, Gail was awarded the Jubilee medal by the Government of Canada for her contributions to music education.

In the Piano Magazine Clavier Companion, Nov./Dec.2015 issue, will appear an article by Gail entitled “Suzuki Piano: a student-centered approach”.

Prerequisite course:

Piano Unit 1

Audition: Piano Basic, or Piano Comprehensive.

Deadline: All audition materials must be submitted by October 28 *
*A discounted Audition Fee applies if audition is submitted before September 2. If submitted within 8-weeks of the course start date, the regular audition fee will apply.
