Event Description

Our core programs in violin, viola, cello, and piano, led by SOSI’s fabulous international faculty, include master classes, group lessons, and music enrichment courses such as Cello Choir, DrumFit, Percussion, Reading Classes, and Orchestra. In addition to these classes, we offer exciting optional courses. In our Handbells class, students will be part of an ensemble that acts as one HUGE instrument, with each player being responsible for playing a particular note or notes in a composition.
In Improvisation for String Players, campers can learn how there are no wrong notes when you create your own music. Students will learn to share musical ideas in game-like approaches and discover compositional forms all through the use of improvisation. Classical music and even some jazz and blues will be explored.
Pianists and string players will explore the expressive power and flexibility of air as a musical medium as they learn to play the flute, “bending” the air, in our Flute option. In our Percussion for String Students class, campers can try WLU’s fabulous percussion equipment—drums, xylophones and other mallet instruments—while developing rhythmic reading and improvisational skills. Lots of fun!
Violinists get a chance to explore the tone colours of the viola in a group situation by working on viola ensemble repertoire in Viola for Violinists , while pianists can find out what it feels like to play two keyboards at once, and different notes with your feet at the same time, in Organ for Pianists.
In our always popular Fiddling class, string players will explore techniques that let you turn any piece into a fiddle tune. Learn tunes from different fiddling traditions, and get your feet tapping!
Senior string players can collaborate with senior pianists in our String/Piano Duo course.
In Music Through the Ages, the great operas, ballets and symphonic works come alive as their stories are dramatically retold in a multi-media presentation.
Have fun in our annual Operetta, in which there will be a variety of solo, ensemble, and speaking roles. There’s a part for everybody!
Our youngest campers can join the Baby & Toddler Class, or the Sibling Option, and adults can take Private Lessons for Adults in violin, cello, or piano. Our Alexander Technique specialist offers an introductory seminar and private lessons to help campers understand the principles of the Technique, and see how it relates both to everyday life and to making music. There is truly something for everyone at SOSI!
