Updates from the Suzuki Community in Puerto Rico

2018 Asociación Suzuki de Violin de Puerto Rico Workshop

Many members of the SAA have been in close contact with Suzuki teacher colleagues in Puerto Rico since the devastating hurricane in September 2017, providing moral and monetary support. Despite formidable odds against them, the Asociación Suzuki de Violin de Puerto Rico held its annual workshops in January 2018, inviting several mainland SAA teachers to join them.

Read about it more on our Home Page News or Here.

Interview excerpt: Martin Beaver, interviewed by Janis Wittrig

Martin Beaver

“One of my end goals with any student (apart from building technique, repertoire, artistic sensitivity and communication skills) is that they ultimately become their own teacher. Therefore, I spend quite a bit of time discussing and demonstrating practice techniques with them. I encourage slow and relaxed practice so that they can analyze a problem, make corrections and gradually speed a passage up to normal tempo. In terms of analysis, we go over the various aspects in both hands/arms that can affect any given passage and the focus of mental energies.”
Martin Beaver will perform with Montrose Trio, sponsored by Robertson and Sons Violin Shop, at the 2018 SAA Conference.

Interview excerpt: Berta Rojas, Musical Ambassador from Paraguay, interviewed by Andrea Cannon

Berta Rojas Photo

“The legacy of Agustín Barrios is one of Paraguay’s greatest cultural treasures; through playing his music I discovered what’s most essential and profound about the land I was born in and about this great homeland we call Latin America. When I acquired that meaningful understanding of the invaluable heritage Mangoré left us, that’s when my mission to share it with the people of my country began, especially with the younger generations so that they, too, may feel connected with his music.”
Berta Rojas is Guitar Clinician for the 2018 SAA Conference.

Kinder Concert at the Bookstore

Kinder Concet at he bookstore

From Silvia Noriega Cerna:

On a May Saturday afternoon I went to the local bookstore to play with my youngest students. We played several Book 1 themes. We invited the community and gave candies to all kids. We had a lot of fun.

Have a great picture to share? We are looking for photos of students performing in their community. ShortScore wants to feature your experiences!
