Building Noble Hearts—S2 E4

I’m So Happy I Get to Bring Them In

What is community? How do you find it? Join it? Build it? To find an answer, we had a conversation with someone who has built a remarkably strong and unified music group. Clara Hardie started with relationships that were very dear to her, but among a population that hadn’t had access to Suzuki teaching before: the families that were regulars of The Capuchin Soup kitchen in Detroit.

Revisiting Book One

School Stock Photo

We all need a boost sometimes. For some teachers, repeating an entire early training course (though very worthwhile!) doesn’t feel like the boost they were looking for. Enter Revisiting Unit One, a course designed for experienced teachers who are ready to circle back to the fundamentals to see new views on the material and join a seasoned class of teachers to talk about beginning students.

We interviewed participants in this program to understand more about why they took the course, what it was like, and what benefits they gained. Here are their answers.

Name a Star in Someone’s Honor!

Galaxy Map Large Sample

Grateful for a special teacher? Remembering a loved one who appreciated children and music? Recently, Monique Pinelli and Kay Collier McLaughlin have had stars named in their honor.

You too can give a lasting and meaningful gift by naming a “star” in someone’s honor on the Giving Galaxy of Stars. Watch this touching video and join the many others in “thanking our lucky stars” as we strive to light up the SAA Galaxy of Stars with appreciation.

Topics include:

  • Identifying the appropriate time to move ahead in the repertoire
  • Incorporating regular, productive review work in daily teaching and practicing
  • Incorporating ear training and learning by ear in daily teaching

  • Giving productive, balanced, frequent feedback to students
  • Communicating effectively and working productively with parents
  • Structuring lessons to facilitate successful progress

Additional Recordings for the Suzuki Violin School

From the SAA Violin Committee:
Establishing a rich musical environment through listening is a cornerstone of the Suzuki approach and an all-important component of the “Language Learning Analogy.” Listening repetitively to fine performances creates a palette of musical concepts and ideas and an internal image of tone in the mind. A vital part of creating an optimal learning environment is for the teacher to explore a wide variety of recordings. To that end, the SAA Violin Committee offers the list below of recordings which are either “vintage” recordings of the Suzuki Violin School or suggestions for numerous other recorded versions of the repertoire.

More information and links are available here.
