Dear Friends
Cherry Blossom Picture

The cherry blossom (Sakura) trees of Japan are legendary in their poetic beauty. The small delicate pink flowers represent the renewal and beauty of life as spring begins. It has become a tradition in April for the SAA to create a virtual cherry blossom tree on our website in honor of Dr. Suzuki and others who have contributed to the Suzuki movement and to strengthening our incredible Suzuki community in the Americas.

Traditionally, we have asked for a donation to the SAA in order to post to our tree. This year, we ask only for your expressions of gratitude for Suzuki teachers, friends and students who have meant so much to us, and help build an entire grove of trees.

Honor a special teacher, colleague, student, parent, or family—someone who has brought a smile to your face, new insight, a special memory—whoever has made a difference for you during these challenging days.

As you probably know, the May Conference has moved to September 3-7, 2020, at the Hilton Minneapolis and Minneapolis Convention Center! We hope you will be able to join us!

A new reservation page for the Hilton will be added to the SAA website as soon as possible, along with a Conference registration for those of you who still need to register. The Early Bird rates will continue to be available.

While we are well aware that restrictions on travel and group gatherings may still prevent the Conference from taking place, we are nevertheless excited that we can try to save this huge conference event. If we all do our part, we can get past this crisis more quickly!

The Conference can be something to look forward to over the coming months, amid restrictions and discouraging news. Updates will be posted very soon!

Opportunities for Suzuki Teachers to further their knowledge

With only a few institutes able to take place in the coming months due to restrictions imposed by the spread of the Corona virus, many teachers will miss the opportunity to participate in Suzuki pedagogy courses usually hosted at institutes throughout our region. (Check the SAA website or institutes’ own websites for cancellations.) We look forward to the return of all our SAA Institutes next summer, bringing all the fun and learning they always provide!

In the absence of SAA unit training over the next several months, SAA Trainers will be offering numerous short online course opportunities.
Watch for listings of options for continuing education and inspiration!

Note: No SAA unit courses or core training will be offered online.
This includes ECC, book courses, Practicum, Strategies, and Overview and Review courses.

Teaching Your Suzuki Students during the Pandemic:
Online Alternatives

In keeping with the SAA’s commitment to creating safe learning communities, please heed any instructions from local and national health authorities regarding social distancing and quarantine. Following directives keeps us all safer and healthier at a time where collective efforts are needed for the benefit of all.

With many schools, studios, and programs closed for a while, we are fortunate that technology provides us capabilities for continuing to work with our students and families. For those who are looking for solutions, the pool of resources is growing steadily. A few ideas for Suzuki teachers include these:

Many of these shared ideas and resources include solutions for private lesson teaching and for recitals and group lessons, as well.

Additionally, remember to utilize the resources within your studio. Parents who are skilled computer users, distance learning practitioners, and telecommuters are willing to help!

Now more than ever, our world needs the gifts of presence, beauty, community, and hope that are always at the heart of our work. Dr. Suzuki’s legacy is a BIG vision for the happiness of children and peace in our world. We shall continue to meet this challenge together; we are known for not giving up!

The Sing-Along

In December and June, Kathleen Moser and students love to perform at a retirement community, complete with Sing-along pieces! (We’ve found that retired folks have awesome voices!)

Have a great picture to share? We are looking for photos of students performing in their community. Did you invite the neighborhood to a book recital? Or the general public to a group concert? Have you played in an assisted living facility, street fair, or mall? Submit your own picture today!
