Prep for Annual Reports

It’s nearly time for Chapter Annual Reports! We will send out an email reminder with more details soon, but in the meantime, here is a quick list of the documents we need from Chapter leadership by October 31:

  • Annual Financial Report or Financial Documents
  • Chapter Members list, with 100% SAA membership*
  • Report on accomplishments and goals
  • List of current officers, directors, and committee chairs
  • Copies of current corporate Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws

* New! You can find a list of your current Chapter members on the SAA website! Once you log in, go into the Institute/Workshop Admin section of the website (under “More” menu, on the right, in the main navigation), find your organization, look for the “Advertising” heading of the left side menu. Under this you can click on the “Members in Your Area” link, or the “Members in Your Chapter.”

Chapters Unite for Texas Hurricane Relief Efforts

In early September, right after Hurricane Harvey hit southeast Texas, emails started flowing between NTSA, STSA, and the SAA to create the Suzuki Hurricane Relief Fund. Leaders from both chapters ignited the project, and will continue to guide it as damages to music property are assessed, needs are determined, and funds are distributed after they have been collected when the Practice-A-Thon concludes. Donors may contribute directly to help Suzuki community members in need, or studios can participate in the Practice-A-Thon and collect donations after practice goals are met. This fund drive is supported by volunteers and by the SAA, so 100% of funds raised will be donated.

Suzuki Association of Washington State (SAWS)

The Suzuki Association of Washington knew that they wanted to strengthen their membership and also their board. Here’s what they did:

We have 4 new young board members, and 3 other volunteer positions filled by younger members…Infusing the board and our general membership with younger teachers is vital to the continued health of our chapter. We need to diversify our numbers and spit up the jobs that have been filled by “original” board members for too long. They need a break! …We have found that some jobs are intimidating for new potential volunteers and are suitable to splitting into two separate jobs.

This is great visioning by SAWS leadership: seeing what their organization needed in order to be sustainable, creative thinking to rearrange current jobs into manageable sizes, and enticing new members. Well done!

Reach Your Community

Fall is a time for new beginnings in the music education world. Perhaps your chapter has new members, or your area has new SAA members. Whether now or anytime of year, make sure that your first welcome letter is impactful and memorable. Here is an article on the “Essential Elements of a Welcome Email.”

After members are connected to your community, many organizations choose to stay in touch through social media. There are so many platforms, with such different cultures of what is expected, how do you keep it all straight? Here’s a guide to help you decide “What to Post on Each Social Media Platform”.

Reaching Everyone?

Everyone in your chapter leadership should be on the mailing list to receive Chapter Wise, but if there are potential leaders waiting in the wings, former leaders you would like to keep informed, or (horror!) people in your leadership that have been missed, they can add themselves on their personal SAA member page, under “email preferences.”

Chapter Goals:

Connect: Build community among all students, parents, and teachers.

Educate: Provide resources and/or support to teachers and parents, new and current, concerning Suzuki teaching and ideals.

Support: Financially benefit teachers and students for further enrichment (conferences, institutes, workshops).

Celebrate: Arrange Concerts, Graduation, Celebration, Cross Instrument Recitals, Honors Recitals to rejoice in music together.

Respect: Support the Suzuki name/ brand/legacy by assuring SAA membership for teachers, broadening membership, and providing grassroots feedback to the SAA.
