I thought of an idea for our next “parent ed” session, and I’m wondering if anyone has done something similar, or has any advice. I’d like to give a master class on how to practice with your child. I’d ask a parent volunteer to make a video of about ten minutes of practice with their child, then show the video to a group of parents (without children present.) My teaching partner and I can then discuss things like how to acknowledge the child’s effort and successes, how to make corrections effectively and pleasantly, how to choose an appropriate number of repetitions and how to motivate a child to do them, and anything and everything else that comes up. I assume that any parent who is willing to volunteer for this is probably a pretty confident and involved parent, and will probably be a great inspiration to the other parents in the room. Of course we’ll keep it all positive and lighthearted.

Have any of you done anything like this? What advice do you have to help everyone feel comfortable and make it as productive as possible?

What a great idea! Almost like a mini practicum course on piano practice for parents! Please keep us posted and let us know how it goes.

That’s the idea. I’ll let you know how it goes, although we may wait until the Fall. Summer doesn’t seem like a good time for parent ed—too many missing in any given week.
