Book Recitals

I understand that Book Recitals could be taped and sent somewhere for comment or certificate of completion. Is this still done? If yes, how do we learn more about the requirements.

If you’re talking about book graduation certificates for your students, SAA can make those for you. I just added them to our online store. (Previously, the only place you could find this info was in the print membership directory—hard to find!)

If you mean the Certificate of Achievement for you as a teacher, that has an application process detailed here:

Thanks, my question was regarding student completion of the books, not teacher training. It sounds like there’s no tape system at your level, but I have heard that some local Suzuki organizations have more formal recitals or review taped pieces.

Consult your local Suzuki organization. Sometimes teachers do their own book recitals/graduations within the studio. Where I live, SMAC/LA (Los Angeles area) does a make-a-recording, get comments back, participate in the graduation concert and receive a certificate kind of graduation for SMAC/LA members.

Dr. Suzuki used to accept tapes from students all over the world years ago…I know teachers who do this within their own studios…or circulate tapes for evaluation among other local teachers. Living in a rural area with no local Suzuki group, my students have smaller graduation recital parties in their homes and invite friends and family to participate in the performance and celebration. When possible the book 7 graduation for piano is a much bigger event in a special venue on stage or at the home of someone who lives locally and has a Steinway concert grand in his home.

In the last two years, I have started having my students do book recitals separate of the “Suzuki Graduation” recital. This was to serve more than one purpose. I have a number of students who are beginners at ages 11-14. They feel awkward participating in the formal “Suzuki Graduation” concert because of the age difference. Most everyone there that is their age is graduating books 7-10.
So, doing an individual book recital provides them an opportunity to have an official completion and recognition of their efforts. Also, this allows the family and close friends an opportunity to hear them and rally around and support their efforts. They usually choose to do it at their home or the library, and serve refreshments afterwards and make it special celebration.
I still encourage them to participate in the “Suzuki Graduation”. So this does not take place in all of the cases. But for those older students where they just don’t feel they belong it is nice to do for them.
Not to mention, the practice motivation on this! I have noticed an overall increase in practice to keep their pieces up to date for the recital!
For book one and two, they do the whole book. For the rest of the books, they pick their favorite pieces plus their favorite fiddle tunes that they have learned and play those for their book recital.
