I use:
“Up down little children
up down then we slow the bow”

You can also use “save” instead of “slow the bow”.

I’ve also heard:
“Up long little long little long little save” which focuses more on bow division

With both of these you just repeat the same words over and over.

O come, little children, O come, one and all,
O come to the manger in Bethlehem’s stall;
And see what our Father on this holy night,
Has sent us from Heaven for our pure delight.

OR

“Up down itty up itty down itty up” and repeat for the whole song

I just use words for the first line, because there are a lot of challenges there.
After I have the student set up with their C# finger making a lovely tunnel for the E string,
I help with the bowing and sing in my most beautiful singing voice:

O Come Little Children O —

and then in an ugly, funny, jarring voice:

D BB C

I find this helps the student realize there are times when the fingers just stay formed and in place while the bow moves, and other times when the fingers have to wake up and change. Plus the mood is lighter because the student is laughing at my funny voice.

Before doing the rest of the piece, as I play I have the students shout and air bow “And up!” in the rest prior to the first note and each of the extra up bows at the end of each line.

When we get to the third line we sing the tah ti-ti rhythms prior to playing them, and have fun adding the crescendo.

My violin teacher sang something like:

Up bow on the E string’s the way to begin
Up bow on each phrase and your teacher will grin
Up bow on each phrase is the way it should be
Up bow now again is the way it should end.

I found using this with my students very helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozf_DH5BptI

Up long, short short, long, short short, long, short short slow—stop. etc.
