I am a violin teacher, but I do teach viola as well and following a comprehensive course I just took for violin/viola books 1-4, I am interested in doing more viola teacher training. That said, I am curious if anyone has any suggestions as to what version (publisher/edition) of the Schubert Arpeggione is preferred amongst viola teachers for the audition.

Thanks!

I don’t believe the SAA has an official preferred version (yet). I think there’s a nice Henle edition that calls itself “urtext”…

I did my recording with the horrendous Milton Katims International edition. I think I took out some of the more ridiculous up bow staccatos, but I think I did do everything in the ridiculous upper octaves, although the 3rd movement is worse for that. I think it’s more important that you present a solid performance than any particular edition, as long as it relatively resembles something Schubert wrote.

Now available in blog form.

Is anyone interested in doing the upper book training for viola thru Denise Willey in Pleasant Grove, Utah? She said she will hold the class(es) for Bks 5-8 for at least 3 people (counting me). So, all we would need are two more to hold the class(es) at a discounted (not private) rate. Let me know! Thanks!!

Also ~ one other question . . . is the Arpeggione currently in a published Suzuki Bk? Denise told me she thought it wasn’t yet published, but would be coming out in a future Bk 9 or 10 version (sort of like the violin Mozart Concertos). Thx!

For anyone interested, Denise said we could do Bks 5-6 over Christmas break (Dec. 26-31, 2011 & either Dec. 23 or Jan. 2 ~ the 2nd being the preference, to get the 9 days over a weekend requirement). Still working on 7 & 8, which we could most likely do later in the yr, I imagine.
