“Hey wouldn’t it be great if we could all see each other’s studios?” That was one of the comments on the VLR chat boards after Ed Sprungers video tour of his studio.

What a fun idea!

I set up a page on my website where we could all do just that! Teachers would have to make a video tour of their studio and then post it on http://www.myviolinrecital.com Here’s the link so you could check it out.

I think you could do this *if you had the page password protected and only allowed authorized people to look at it. So many good, decent, honest people are not aware of security issues, because they themselves are* honest, decent, etc.

But do you want everyone on the planet to know what you have in your house, the details of what instruments you own, etc.? I certainly don’t.

Please don’t be so trusting? There are people (kids, mostly) with UNIX skills, wandering the underbelly of the net, reading people’s mail, trying to get critical information. There are felons sitting in prison, with internet access. Be at least somewhat security conscious. Practically anyone with half a brain (and no conscience) can find out who you are and where you live. I don’t mean to scare you, but please…

Here is an example of what I am talking about. I ran your site URL:

myviolinrecital.com

on the WHOIS site

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

and got your name and address:

Registrant:
Dxxxx Axxxx
1685 NW Gxxxxx Ave
Bxxx, xxxx 97xxx
United States

(information x’d out to protect you)

While there are other ways I could have obtained this information, this is the quickest and easiest. You really need to pay the small yearly fee, which would prevent this. [Click on “Private Registration”—it’s $9.00/year.]

IMO, 98% of the population are fine; it’s that other small percentage of beasties you need to protect yourself from!

I did look at your studio tour; from the standpoint of security, my personal opinion (FWIW), is that this is a really bad idea. Now anyone who cares to, can determine how your house is setup. Do what you want, of course, but I just don’t think it’s a smart idea.

What a fantastic studio you have! It is wonderfully designed; calming neutral tones and full of natural light. You must be so happy teaching there and I’m sure your students and their parents enjoy coming to their lessons each week. I hope one day I can have a studio as beautiful as yours!
