I went to an institute this summer and they spoke of cellos that were very inexpensive and sounded pretty good. Does anyone know where to get these? I think they said they were from a Canadian dealer. Thanks.

I’m really not sure what might have mentioned, but I am happy with the cellos some of my students have from Northwest Music and KCM Luthiery in Vancouver, BC. They do a pretty good job of setting up the Gliga (I’ve heard they have a reputation of needing adjustments as they come from the factory in Romania), and for the price have a good sound. I think they run from about $1800 for smaller ones to $3000 for 4/4. (A student told me her 4/4 was about $2200 CAD from KCM Luthiery.)

You can get cellos for less, but so far I’ve found these to be probably the best value as far as the sound you get for what you pay. That’s not to say there aren’t others, it’s just that I am familiar with these. Best to try all you can in your price range!

Two music shops I frequent have very pleasing, affordable cellos. At String House of Kanack, the “Tartini” cello is around $1500. They have a 100% exchange and stock many upscale instruments as well. At Student String Shop (Fairport,NY), their “Shen” is around $1000. The staffs at these shops are knowledgeable & helpful, with a plethora of music degrees & playing experience :)
