I am thinking about teaching in my home and am wondering if access to a bathroom is absolutely necessary. What are your thoughts and experiences with this?

Thanks.

Yes, your students will need to use the bathroom from time to time.

Yes, absolutely. Children need a bathroom; some of my parents even have used my dryer. You can’t tell them, no, they can’t use the bathroom! Most of my young families have small brothers and sisters, too, who come to the lesson. Moms often are pregnant—they need the bathroom. I don’t see how you could do without it.

Bathroom access—yes, absolulely necessary. If nothing else, then for washing hands at a minimum.

Is your bathroom location less than ideal? That would pose a challenge.

Yes, bathroom access is necessary, but if you don’t have an ideal location, I figure as long as your house (and especially bathroom is clean) then you’re good. I have had teachers that their houses weren’t set up perfectly for teaching and getting to the bathroom was somewhat of a tour of the house along the way, but that never bothered me personally. I was there for the lessons, not for the bathroom. Most people are ok with it as long as it’s clean.

Yes, my under 7 years old all use the bathroom regularly! Often they come straight from school and are bursting when they arrive for their violin lesson. Also if younger siblings are attending the lesson they often need a visit during the lesson!

Definitely will need access to a bathroom. Some of my students and one of my coffee drinking moms regularly need to “go”. Students coming in with sticky fingers will need a place to wash too. If necessary to remodel at least it should be a tax write off?
