I’m wondering if anyone has worked with a student that has Down Syndrome. In the Fall I will be starting a student—on flute— who has Down Syndrome. Are there any tips you can provide that would be helpful???

I would like to, but have not worked with a student with Down Syndrome. I do have a student with autism I’ve worked with for about five years, of whom I’m very proud. I’d get books on the subject of teaching students with Down Syndrome, if I were you.

One thing to remember is that parents don’t like to have their children categorized as “Down Syndrome student”, or “autistic student.” You have to be careful with language, not to offend. (I learned this the hard way). You should, instead, say student “with…whatever.” This is more sensitive to the family and the student.

With my student with autism, it takes a great deal of love, patience, acceptance, and belief in the ability of the student to progress.
