My daughter plays the violin and the viola. She does not have a private viola teacher as violin is her primary instrument. She plays viola at school and sometimes in a chamber ensemble and orchestra. She recently moved to a full size violin and a 14 inch viola (and it’s a real viola—not a violin restrung.) She likes the 14 inch viola since it is the same size as her violin. At what point to violin/viola students move to a bigger 15 inch or larger viola?

when the student has grown enough to move up to the “next size” violin—of which there isn’t one—that is probably a good time to move up to the “next size” viola.

This is probably sometime in high school.
