Small Violas

Hello Friends,

Some time ago there was a very useful discussion on the use of violins strung as violas and as well as some very helpful tips on which strings some teachers prefer to use on these small “violas.” I am unable to find this thread using the search function (perhaps because of the new, updated forum?) and would really appreciate if someone could help me by resubmitting their advice or by locating the previous thread. Many thanks in advance!

I don’t know anything about that thread either, but I know from personal experience: the 14″ viola is approximately the same size as a full size violin. This is important to know for students adding, or changing to, viola. You can take a 14″ viola and string is like a violin, the better strings the nicer sound (Evah Pirazzi’s are good), and the violin will be pretty powerful.

Alternatively, you can take a full size (4/4) violin and string is like a 14″ viola, if you need to.

Thanks, mshikibu! I am teaching a little girl who is playing on a 3/4 size violin strung as a viola. Needless to say, at the moment this instrument sounds more like a sad little cow than a viola! I seem to remember someone in the previous thread explaining what they use for a C string (a regular C string trimmed down? another G string?—I can’t recall). Since I’m teaching in a not-so-wealthy location, I’m looking for cost-effective yet viable solutions that will keep this student loving that viola sound until she’s big enough for a “proper” viola.

This may be the thread you are looking for:

Or perhaps it is this one:

I don’t know why the search function doesn’t work; perhaps it only searches recent posts back through a certain number of days or months. In any case I knew I had posted to these threads so I browsed all of my own posts until I found them.

I might add that since I posted to both threads, I’ve found out that there is a five-pack of Helicore strings sold for five stringed violins, which includes a 14 inch C string. I haven’t been able to find a place that will just sell the 14 inch C string alone, so you may be stuck with all five strings if you want that option.

At the moment I am leaning toward the Corelli Crystal strings instead of the Helicores, though!

FYI, I messed with some of the search settings, and I think I’ve fixed whatever the problem was. Now a search for viola returns 173 results, instead of just 20. That seems more like it!
