This is a note which the Kendall family sent to many friends of John Kendall.

Dear Friends,

Dad died Thursday night just before midnight. He was comfortable and,
we feel sure, at peace when the time came. After the long struggle
since Thanksgiving, the last week at Arbor Hospice has been a
blessing. So many family and friends have sent their prayers and best
wishes, Dad surely felt the love. And so many dear friends, colleagues
and former students have been able to visit, and have filled his space
during this last week with affection and admiration—and beautiful
music— Dad’s last days have been the send-off his extraordinary life
surely warranted. We are deeply grateful.

Managing Dad’s care during the last five weeks has been a full-time
occupation, but the family has made preliminary plans to organize a
memorial service in Ann Arbor, probably in the spring. We will keep
you all informed. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to covey this
message to others you believe would want to know. We thank you for
your care and love for Dad.
