Interpreting musical notation seems overwhelming. There are symbols for notes, rhythms, bowings as well as dynamics and articulations. But how does one learn to read between the lines and turn reading musical notation into a flowing musical statement of self expression? I get a ton of mileage out of the “add a note” idea of finding the “words”. Especially when teaching the solo Bach repertoire.
