I absolutely loved the article in the latest Suzuki Journal by Allison Huebner-Woerner “Suzuki Method and Autism Therapy” She goes into detail regarding her experience raising a child with autism and working with an autistic boy on violin.

I personally have been working with a very high functioning autistic girl who is in high school since summer. I think my biggest advice is to work with the parent, since they spend the most time with their child and often know their triggers, limits, and behaviors best. Be open to trying new approaches and ideas.

I have worked with students on the Aspergers spectrum, and I learned to apply these two rules of thumb:

  1. Less analysis, more playing. (Many times this means: don’t talk or argue, just play.)
  2. Playing makes the body relax. If there is tension or poor bodily posture, etc., the music itself seems to help with that more than explaining.

I also found that a number focus predominates. Finger charts might help with that. These are the ones I use—PDFs you can download and make into a packet or booklet (all free). http://edwardsviolinstudio.com/downloads/

Please keep in touch about your experience and what else you find that works.

Happy practicing,
Edward
