My daughter needs a mute for a couple pieces she is performing in orchestra. She plays a 1/8 violin; but I can’t tell whether any of the standard mute designs will work on an instrument of this size. I’ve found practice mutes that fit over the bridge of instruments down to 1/8; but I don’t think she needs a mute with that much damping.

Any advice on particular mutes for this purpose?

the normal-sized mute works on my son’s 1/4. I think it should be fine for the 1/8?

Just to report back. It’s a very individual thing. One mute we tried did not work on the 1/8 violin because the spacing between the strings is too tight. Another mute does work but is too tight to slide up to the bridge. A third does work well.

It looks like one of those things that you just need to go a shop and try several.
