Hi everyone!

I just applied to become a member of SSA. I have wanted to take the teacher training for years now, but haven’t had the opportunity of a free summer yet. I’m a violist and have spent a lot of time and money trying to fix injury problems I have with the instrument and also just had foot surgery.

I’d really like to use the time while practicing is limited to become a better teacher through the Suzuki training. It would be very difficult without a scholarship, but when the deadline comes in February I will only be at the two month mark- under the specifications three months are required. Does anyone know how strict this requirement is? Please let me know if you’ve had experience with this.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Madison,

Like our students, we need to take things at our own pace. Even if you miss the deadline, there are things you can do to start now. Find teachers in your area to start observing, this is a requirement of the classes and such a valuable part of the process. Start reading the books and listening to the recordings, so when you get to your first class, you will be very prepared. Also, I believe most folks begin by taking Every Child Can, which is a shorter more affordable class than Book 1. Also check with the institutes and schools where you are considering taking your courses. Some offer payment plans or scholarships. If you are working for a school, check to see if they offer funds for professional development. Good luck on your journey!

Hi Laura-

Thank you so much for the advice. There is a registered Suzuki teacher in town where I live, so I will get in contact with her asap! I’m registered for Every Child Can at the ASTA conference in March.

Which books are you talking about? Nurtured by Love? Are there more? I will also begin contacting the Suzuki Institutes to get further information. Thanks again for your help!

Madison,

In the area where I did my training (DC/Northern VA), they were strict about deadlines and I wasn’t able to find scholarship money. I was able to play some gigs and raise the money, but I was prepared to borrow some so I wouldn’t have to wait another year to train. Observing is DEFINITELY a huge huge help if you can train this year. Best of luck!!

Thanks for your input Caitlin!

I was looking at some of the different institutes and they have different deadlines than the main Suzuki website. If I go by the institute I still may be able to apply. I’m excited to get started observing. I have thought about going to D.C. for Unit 1 because I have always wanted to go and I have a few friends who live there.

Hi Madison,
I think the SAA waiting period is just so they are sure to have time to evaluate your audition. Many institutes will take trainees who haven’t passed their audition yet, and they just wait to officially give credit for the course until the audition has been passed.
