Are institutes the only way to complete teacher training?

Is it ever acceptable or possible to get teacher training over a period of months from a teacher trainer in your area, or is getting training at institutes the only option? I went to institutes for ECC, book 1 and book 2, and I missed book 3 last year because of illness, and the teacher I really wanted to get the training from is now doing book 4 this year at the end of the summer. I would really like to do book 4 at the institute with this teacher but I can’t afford to travel to two different institutes this summer, so I’m wondering if there is another way I can complete my book three training (locally, with a teacher trainer) before the end of the summer. Is this done or should I just focus on going to an institute for book 3 this summer? Any insight would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Saturday I completed the ECC course with Sharon Miller and she mentioned that she was currently doing a Unit 1 training in her area. It sounds like what you are suggesting, so I would think that would be perfectly alright. It is also mentioned at the following link here. It states that workshops can take place at a variety of places, including the teacher trainer’s studio, so I’d say go for it if you have an SAA trainer readily available!

Best of luck!

Yes, some training is offered at a trainer’s studio over a longer period of time. (It is also available along with a degree at some colleges.) I took a look (click events—violin—violin 3) and I see there is a March institute in Dallas offering book 3. I don’t know if that works better for you than two summer institutes. I didn’t see any studio courses listed, but perhaps you could arrange it through a teacher trainer directly. There are also some institutes which offer both 3 and 4 back to back to save on travel.

I know you are looking at other ways to do book 3, but you can take book 4 out of order. You only have to do ECC- book 2 in order. If you can only take one teacher training course, I’d suggest you take it with a teacher you love.

Thank you so much for the responses, this was so helpful. I will look into the Dallas training, and also I had thought that 1-4 had to be taken in order. If it is only through book 2, I may just catch up on book 3 another summer. Thanks again!
