I am wanting my students to have uniform concert black for recitals and performances. They need to be able to service small children’s sizes to adult sizes. Anyone have someone they absolutely love? It would be great if they had boys and girls clothing. Thanks for any help!!

I imagine you’ve already found Concert Black online. They have girls’ sizes as small as size 4, and women’s—no boys/men. I haven’t dealt with the company myself—just window shopped.

I did see that site and that’s who I will use for the girls and they are giving us a nice discount. I just wish there was something for the boys too.

When I was in high school and we had an orchestra uniform, the girls’ dresses were all made by either ourselves or our mothers (same pattern/fabric set aside at the store), and the guys provided their own black pants and purchased the same dress shirts and bow ties from Sears catalog. There are probably many more online formal wear places to order from now. ??

I was thinking it would be nice to have a studio uniform too, but I was thinking a little less formal. Not that I don’t like the formal look, but I’m thinking it would probably be too much for some of my families. Maybe a simple vest design, maybe reversible so there could be two looks, which would hopefully fit more than one year, and then be passed on—worn over black bottoms and white or black tops…

As a new teacher, I was very surprised at how some of the students were dressed for our first recital. I didn’t know I would have to TELL them to dress up!

Speaking of concert wear… if I had violinists I would make sure the skirts were beyond knee length WHILE SEATED. The girls tend to not put their knees together, and twice in the last year I’ve been at events where there was a very clear view from the audience due to a raised stage….!! Of course this is also an issue for cellists, but it’s quite obvious they have to have knees apart… and at least the cello is there…
