Hi fellow teachers,

I live in Colorado but teach two sisters that live in Vancouver, BC, via Skype. They were previously students of mine when we all lived in Bermuda. Well, it is time for the oldest, who is 8 and in Book 4, to get a 1/2 size violin. I am wondering if there are any good shops in the Vancouver area that would serve her well now and in the future. I am hoping they can buy from someplace with a trade in policy so am looking for a shop that would have a good selection of full size violins. Here in the States I usually use Robertsons or Claire Givens, but since Vancouver is such an artistic city, I thought there might be something comparable there.

…..just another complication of online lessons!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi Lisa,

I don’t live in Vancouver, but it’s one of the closest places to me which has decent violin shops! Even though Northwest Music is not specifically a violin shop, they have provided well set-up cellos for some of my students, and definitely have a trade-up policy. I sent them there on recommendation of another cello teacher.

Some of my students have also been very happy with KCM Luthiery, a smaller shop. They have commented on Chris’s great service. Best to phone him first as he’s not open every day. Travels in the summer to workshops, etc.

I’m sure there are other good shops, too, but these are the ones I have some knowledge of.

Lisa hey!! it’s Laura from NAU. I am NOT in Vancouver (Florida Actually). And don’t know any shops there, but I DO have a store of my own. I get very good Instruments from Howard Core Company. I have a rental program and I sell them as well. I do honor trade ins and I have a trial program. If your student was interested I would be more then willing to help out. (I know you might hesitate since I am out of state, but I mail instruments all the time and I have a few customers renting from me who are out of state. Just in case I can help, here is my info. Check out the website—we specialize in suzuki and have discounts for teachers and schools!
