I have recently graduated with my masters degree in viola performance and I am wondering what to charge per hour for private lessons. I have been teaching privately and for various music schools for the past ten years. I live in Ontario and I am taking Suzuki violin book one training this summer. I was also trained through the Suzuki method myself.

I am currently hired at two Suzuki schools starting in September, one which has an hourly rate that I receive a portion of and one that allows me to set my own fees. I am at a loss as to what to charge. I am well educated and a fairly experienced teacher so I don’t want to under charge even if it means losing out on some students. Any advice would be appreciated.

I’m not too far down the road from you and I charge $50/hour if that helps any. I know several other teachers in my city charge similar rates. I see recent graduates sometimes charging more like $40 or $45/hour but assuming rates are similar where you are, I’d go with at least $50/hour.

Hope that helps!
