Parent evaluation of teacher

I saved this document from the SAA site a little while back. I was considering giving it to my students’ parents and asking them if they would give me their evaluation (scale of 1-5?) on the pedagogy section. I have my own ideas about where I could improve, but thought it might be helpful to see how the parents see it. Good idea? Bad idea?

Barb, I did a similar thing about a year ago. Here’s the parent survey form. I had a different form for my adult students.

It was so motivating for me! And the parents really appreciated the opportunity to speak candidly, even if they chose to not fill it out in the end. (Although 90% of them did)

Feel free to “steal” whatever you want from it!

I do this every year. The week before, I hand out a student questionnaire (for the student to fill out) and a parent questionnaire. The following week, we take time out of the lesson to discuss both questionnaires, as well as the evaluation I filled out of the student. This is a wonderful time to discuss practice (or lack thereof), goals for the upcoming year, weaknesses, character strengths and flaws, and any facet of my studio/teaching that may not be jelling for the family. I am inspired by both of your lists, Barb and Emily, and look forward to incorporating aspects into my evaluation time next year.

For a peek at the documents that inspired me to start these annual evaluations, you can check out this blog article on the topic.

You all have such useful ideas! I’m so grateful for your thoughts about parent/teacher/student evaluations… I’m encouraged to begin using such a process in my own studio. Thank you!

Mikaela, same blog posts inspired me! I have adapted her student version and was planning to use that with the students. Emily Ann—thank you for sharing yours! I might incorporate some of those ideas.

Thanks to all for your comments!
