What about Stories of Composers for Young Musicians by Catherine Wolff Kendall? Many of these biographies of composers of tunes in the Suzuki violin repertoire, are short enough to read during a lesson. The book also includes portraits and birthdays of most of the composers.

For preschool I really like The Musical Life of Gustav Mole If you can set it up for them to listen to the CD—even better!

A long time ago I enjoyed Zin! Zin! Zin!, a Violin and Meet the Orchestra for introducing the instruments to my boys.

And don’t forget Diamond in the Sky, the Suzuki biography for children at the 4th- 6th grade level.

Work is Play if You Practice My Way by Margaret Keith is a nice little book written from the perspective of a 5th grade girl learning the violin. She talks about things she has learned about good practice.

young-musicians.com has other young readers as well, some of which, of course, have already been suggested here.

Isn’t stocking a library fun? :)

There are a series of these about different composers available. We have a couple and they’re very funny and have cute cartoons in them. My oldest has memorized the Beethoven one.

The Remarkable Farkle McBride by John Lithgow.  Cute book about a kiddo who tries all kinds of instruments and then being a conductor!

I’ll put in a plug for my new book, “From Suzuki to Mozart,” available through Amazon.com. It is the history of every single piece in the Suzuki repertoire, in the order that they are found in the books, along with short composer bios. All sorts of interesting stories, especially about the lesser known composers!

My 2 boys (6 year old piano and 9 year old violin) love The 39 Apartments of Ludwig Van Beethoven. It’s very, very quirky with a lot of strange but true stories about Beethoven. The drawings and writing are very funny. The book got them interested in learning more about the lives of the composers in their Suzuki books.
