Book 1 Guidelines
Effective September 2003
Prerequisites for Teacher Participation in Book 1
Teacher Participants must:
- Complete the Every Child Can!© course prior to beginning Book 1 (Completion and registration of 1A at any time prior to September 1, 2003, may be substituted for ECC).
- Complete the SAA video audition process to determine their status in the course.*
- Complete Book 1 prior to taking any further unit training.
- Be SAA Active members to take the course.
- Be high school graduates.
- Prepare for the course by familiarizing themselves with the Book 1 repertoire.
* This is not intended to indicate that “tape pending” is not an option, but completion of the process is highly recommended, as the time and cost commitment are greater for Book 1 than for 1A alone. It is therefore far better that the trainee know in advance whether his/her status will be participant or auditor.
Requirements for Book 1 Course Set-up
- 28 hours of class/lecture, including a suggested 2 hours of observation and discussion of the trainer’s own students either by video or live.
- 15 hours of observation of student lessons.
- Same Trainer conducts the whole course.
- A maximum of 6 hours of class time per day.
- A minimum of 2 hours of class time per day.
- The course is offered over a minimum of 8 days.
- The Institute provides the opportunity to observe the Teacher Trainer teaching live student lessons on each of a minimum of 6 days.
Book 1 Set-up Recommendations
- 3-4 hours of class time per day.
- Some unscheduled time during the course (a day, afternoon, evening).
- It is recommended that no tuition discounts be provided to auditors.
Some responsibilities of Institute/Workshop Director(s) and Teacher Trainer
- It is expected that the Director or course sponsor will provide adequate observation opportunities over 6 or more course days.
- It is the Trainer’s obligation to check out with the Director/course sponsor that students at appropriate levels will be available for demonstration lessons.
- Institute and Workshop Directors are expected to inform registrants of SAA requirements listed above in all their marketing pieces.
- Directors are expected to check in advance each registrant’s course prerequisites, the SAA membership and the audition status of each course registrant.
