Forty years ago, music educators had low expectations for most children, with special attention reserved for the so-called gifted or talented students. Today, largely because of the influence of Suzuki teachers, it is widely recognized that with excellent teaching and support, all children can play in tune, make…

In this troubled economy, how can teachers be expected to afford the high cost of teacher training?

Every business expects to re-invest some of the profits back into that business. The percentage can vary, from 10% to 50%, with newer businesses investing more because of start up costs. When you invest in more training, it’s like investing in yourself, and that has a payoff of a lifetime of teaching.

Upcoming SPA courses & how to host

Upcoming SPA Courses

Suzuki Principles in Action (SPA) is a course designed to help teachers incorporate Suzuki’s principles effectively in their teaching. The course focuses on how to teach, not what to teach, and to allow for the sharing of ideas among all instrument areas. It is based on Dr. Suzuki’s belief that knowledge is an important first step, but “knowledge plus 10,000 times” is what produces ability. This important principle, which teachers frequently explain to their students, applies equally to the art of teaching.

The inspiration for SPA came from a need, identified by both Trainers…

Prerequisite training and membership renewals must be completed by the start date of your training course. On time auditions are due 2 months before the start date of your course, to allow sufficient time for a decision before you begin training. Late auditions are accepted until 1 month after the start date of your course. After that, your training is recorded as an audit and you will not receive credit.

The teacher training course registration process has been moved online for Institutes this summer, and, if all goes well, will be implemented for all teacher training venues: workshops, apprenticeships, etc.

What does this mean for teachers?

Most of all: less paperwork to remember! Your training this summer will be registered with the SAA automatically by the Institutes—no need for you to mail forms or fees to the SAA. As soon as your training has been registered, usually a few weeks after your course, you will be notified by email. You can then go online and view/print an updated training transcript. By drastically reducing the amount of paper and postal mail, this new registration process is also environmentally friendly.
