Her parents assumed that she was just a good sleeper, able to tune out the loud sounds of her toddler brother. But at four months, they noticed that Emily wasn’t cooing, babbling or responding like other babies. They had her hearing checked, and the diagnosis was profound deafness. Emily’s cochlea was non-functional, preventing any sound from being transmitted from her ears to her brain.
Emily’s parents researched possible solutions and a cochlear implant appeared to be the best alternative.…

Thank you to all who participated and entered the Suzuki Student Writing Contest. We received more than 50 entries, and each one was a joy to read. It’s magnificent to see some of the many talents of Suzuki students on display.
Many thanks also to parents and teachers who promoted the contest and assisted students in preparing their entries.
We are proud to announce the winners and finalists of the 2011 Suzuki Student Writing Contest.
The SAA would like your students’ nonfiction and poetry submissions for upcoming publications! Winning selections may appear in the SAA Minijournal, on the SAA website, or in other SAA publications. Entries are due April 15, 2011.
Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
What do you tell people when they ask about what’s in your instrument case?
What is your favorite Suzuki experience so far?
If your instrument could speak, what would it say?
Which musician, composer, or musical figure do you admire the most, and why?
Mikaela Schneider, a sixteen-year-old Suzuki student from the Milwaukee area, performed in four concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. with Marvin Hamlisch, December 9-12. She also performed with Hamlisch and the Dallas Symphony December 4th and 5th.
Mr. Hamlisch invited Mikaela to sing at the Kennedy Center Holiday Concert last year after hearing her sing Schubert’s Ave Maria in the Milwaukee Symphony’s Holiday Concert. This year he invited her to sing in Washington, D.C. and in Dallas as well.
Young musicians from both North and South America joined together at this year’s “Teamwork” Conference to form two outstanding string orchestras—Suzuki Youth Orchestras of the Americas I and II. Each child arrived at the conference very well prepared, having worked on the music with his/her home teacher. Then, with expert guidance from two amazing conductors, Winifred Crock (SYOA 1) from St. Louis, Missouri, and Marilyn Kesler (SYOA 2) from Okemos, Michigan, students worked diligently forming two fantastic sounding “teams.”
The weekend kicked off on Thursday with full orchestra rehearsals, followed by…
Daniel Coyle was a keynote speaker at our 2010 conference. Be on the look out for the next ASJ with conference summations. Here are some of his great tips on training your brain:
6-year-old Suzuki piano student Gavin George will be featured on The Early Show (CBS) on Monday, April 19.
He is estimated to appear at approximately 8:45 AM, but we can’t count on that time. The show runs from 7 to 9 AM. They will show some footage from his Carnegie Hall concert on the 18th, interview him and have him perform. Thought you might enjoy watching it!
Six-year-old Suzuki Pianist Gavin George has been named a Gold Medal winner in the competition sponsored by The American Association for Development of the Gifted and Talented. Gavin will perform in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on April 18 in the “Passion of Music 2010″ Festival. He will perform Mendessohn’s Venetian Gondola Song, Op. 30, No. 6.
Aber Suzuki Center student, soprano Mikaela Schneider, 15, of Greendale, WI, a student of Suzuki voice teacher Mary Hofer, sang Schubert’s Ave Maria with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra at their holiday concert this past weekend. Guest conductor Marvin Hamlisch (also conductor of the National Symphony Pops Orchestra), was so impressed with her performance that he asked her on the spot to sing four concerts at the Kennedy Center this coming weekend, December 12th and 13th! Hopefully during rehearsal she will get to visit with ASC alumni Joel Fuller, violinist, who is a member of the National Symphony Orchestra.
