Sometime in the early 1980s, I received a call saying a family was moving from Evanston, IL, to Boulder, CO. Would I teach their son Suzuki cello? Alas, it was at least an hour’s drive from Boulder to Lakewood—but at that time the mother had no other choice for her son to continue with Suzuki cello, as there were no Suzuki cello teachers in Boulder. The mom agreed. The mom was Pam Brasch.
It soon became evident that this was no ordinary mom, content to let her son practice a few minutes a…

Dorothy’s introduction to the Suzuki Method was in the winter of 1968/69 when daughters Beth and Sharon began Suzuki violin study. Dorothy soon learned about the developments in Suzuki Piano and embarked on her career as an instructor and trainer in that area.
When Dorothy first met Dr. Suzuki in 1972, she heard him say the words that would forever change the direction of her life: “Music education of a child should not start at birth but should start nine months before birth.” Two years later when she returned to Hawaii…

It is my pleasure to share with you the work of William Kossler in bringing the experience of his Matsumoto Training to Suzuki Guitar in the Americas. Suzuki Teachers place high priority on Dr. Suzuki’s Philosophy. Those who worked with Dr. Suzuki in Japan offer us much as role models with a first-hand perspective. Among guitarists, our only member who graduated from the Talent Education Institute of Matsumoto is Bill Kossler. His experience brings us many unique viewpoints and continues to have a major impact within our Guitar community.

The Creating Learning Community awards are designed to celebrate significant contributions by individuals or groups who have contributed to the support of Dr. Suzuki’s ideas and the Suzuki community. Judi Bagnato, a Music Education and Suzuki Editor at Alfred Music Publishing, definitely fits that description. She is the person who unfailingly supports the dissemination of Dr. Suzuki’s ideas and serves the Suzuki community through the publication of the Suzuki Core Materials (books and recordings) and Suzuki-related materials. She is the person behind the books.
Judi Gowe was hired by Warner…

Pam Brasch, Dorothy Jones, and William Kossler. (Judi Gowe Bagnato not pictured.)
On Saturday evening of the conference, the ballroom was hushed in anticipation for the announcement of the recipients of the Creating Learning Community Awards.
Through the biennial CLC Awards Program the SAA is pleased to recognize and celebrate significant contributions by outstanding individuals, groups, programs and organizations within our unique community of teachers, parents, students, families and friends, members of the business community and schools or groups involved in Suzuki education.
These awards recognize those who have worked toward the development and expansion of the Suzuki learning community in the Americas or internationally or who have helped to preserve the Suzuki legacy. The tributes and presentations illustrated how this year’s recipients contributed beyond the ordinary professional duties or routine work toward the welfare and growth of the Suzuki community.

Young musicians from both North and South America joined together at this year’s “Teamwork” Conference to form two outstanding string orchestras—Suzuki Youth Orchestras of the Americas I and II. Each child arrived at the conference very well prepared, having worked on the music with his/her home teacher. Then, with expert guidance from two amazing conductors, Winifred Crock (SYOA 1) from St. Louis, Missouri, and Marilyn Kesler (SYOA 2) from Okemos, Michigan, students worked diligently forming two fantastic sounding “teams.”
The weekend kicked off on Thursday with full orchestra rehearsals, followed by…

Board Chair Teri Einfeldt opened the SAA’s 2010 Annual General Meeting, welcoming and thanking everyone who came.
Marilyn Kesler talked about this summer’s institutes. With 67 institutes planned, there are 10 more than in 2009 and 4 more than the average number over the past six years! 32 states are to hold one or more institutes, and the eight to be held in Canada will take place in six different provinces. In addition to the North American Summer Institutes, Festivals, which are the Latin American equivalent of Institutes, were held in Mexico, Peru, El Salvador and Costa Rica. A few of the additional sites where teacher training was held included Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

Dear Colleague,
Can you believe it was the 14th Conference sponsored by SAA?
I thought you might be interested in some of the major events, particularly the sessions related to piano.
I will begin with the Teacher Training day on the Thursday. Pam Brasch and Joanne Melvin presented a ‘promo’ for the newly launched SPA course, and it would seem that there is a hugely favourable response amongst the few teachers who have been lucky enough to take the course. Do watch for the course being offered in your area, and if any of you would like to sponsor a SPA course, check…
