I was a double bassist with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra for 20 years, and now teach double bass at the University of Arkansas and the Suzuki Music School of Arkansas, both in Fayetteville, AR. I received my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in double-bass performance from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, studying classical double-bass with Lucas Drew and jazz electric bass with Don Coffman; my doctoral thesis is based on studies for jazz bass. As a graduate assistant to Dr. Lucas Drew at University of Miami 1977-1980, I taught classroom string pedagogy and studio jazz electric bass/classical double bass; I was later adjunct professor of electric bass/double bass at Florida International University, Miami, FL (1985-1987). I was born Ft. Worth, TX, grew up in Biloxi, MS. At the University of Miami I met my wife, Lourdes, a piano and composition major; and now have two grown children, Teresa and Michael. In 2005 I left Miami to live in Rogers, Arkansas (the Ozarks!). My latest undertaking is the Ozark MiniBass Project, involving students as young as six on fractional size double basses and acquiring small instruments for them to play.
