Shirley Jamison Star teaches violin/fiddle in the Ottawa (KS) Suzuki Strings, directs Suzuki ECE, and is Assistant to the Director for Absolutely Ottawa! Summer Programs. Shirley holds a BME, summa cum laude, from Houston Baptist University (Violin Performance, All-Level Music Education, certification in Early Childhood Special Education, Language/Learning Disabilities, Kindergarten). She studied with Shinichi Suzuki in Japan and has completed SAA coursework in Books 1-10, post-book advanced literature teacher enrichment courses, and Suzuki ECE coursework. She has taught at Suzuki workshops and institutes across the U.S. From 1979-2004, Shirley taught Suzuki violin, viola, and ECE at Parker Music Academy (Houston ISD), worked with Texas student orchestras, maintained a private studio, and performed as a freelance violinist. She directed the U.S. Olympic Festival Fiddlers for the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival Opening Ceremonies and has chaired several regional/national fiddling competitions. Shirley was the Suzuki ECE Coordinator for the 2010 SAA Conference.
