A Season of Gifts, Gratitude, and Resolutions

SAA 2017

This year was filled with joys, accomplishments and for some, unanticipated challenges. Throughout the year, the resilience, support, and generosity of our Suzuki community has been rewarding and empowering. Through your gifts, the SAA is supporting families and teachers affected by major hurricanes. Through your support for the annual “Dr. Suzuki Birthday Campaign,” the numbers of teachers receiving teacher development scholarships is continuing to grow.

According to the Josephson Institute of Ethics, “character-based decisions must take into account and reflect a concern for the interests and well-being of all affected individuals.” In our community, we treasure Dr. Suzuki’s words “character first, ability second” as a core principle which defines us and sets us apart. Your financial support to the SAA demonstrates a clear commitment to that principle of character development. It also shows that you walk the talk. The SAA Board of Directors extends a heartfelt thank you to all who supported our fundraising efforts in 2017.

When President Obama opened the doors to Cuba in December of 2014, Chicago Consort Music Director Thomas Wermuth and Ed Kreitman immediately started making plans to bring the Chicago Consort there for a cultural and musical exchange concert tour. Their tour experiences are detailed in the latest American Suzuki Journal, and on our website as well.

Chain Reaction.

What festive paper chains! Here’s a great listening idea for New Year’s resolutions around the corner.

Chain Reaction

From Jill Thomas: “My students weren’t listening enough to their piano songs on their Suzuki CD so I told them that for every day of listening, they could add, on the day of their lesson, a loop to the paper chain in my studio. I wound it around my stairway banister, my ficus benjamina tree, the cactus in the adjacent dining room, the chandelier in the same room and down the banister on the opposite side of the stairway, until it had come full circle. As the chain grew, so did the number of times that my students listened per week. Below is a photo of us with our 542 loop listening chain.”

Have a great picture to share? We are looking for photos of students performing in their community. Did you invite the neighborhood to a book recital? Have you played in an assisted living facility, street fair, or mall? ShortScore wants to feature pictures from your community!
