2010 Summer Institutes Preliminary 2010 Summer Institute information is now available online. There are 62 Institutes planned for next summer, and there may be some new ones announced in the next newsletter. More detailed information including prices will be published online on December 15 and in the Winter issue of the Journal next year. Suzuki EventsDon’t forget, you can find upcoming Suzuki teacher training and events for students any time of the year—just check the website Events section. You can search the events by instrument, event type (students, book 2, conferences, etc.), location, and date. While the majority of events are at summer Institutes from June through August, Every Child Can classes are always happening, and local chapters often put on student workshops and special teacher lectures during the school year. Chapters and Group members can get their events listed by submitting the Chapter/Group event form. Ask the Experts Last summer, focus groups at summer Institutes were asked to submit questions for a panel of “Suzuki Experts” to answer. Here are the first two:
Question: How do we help our students learn to read music without deterioration of their technique? Question: Can there be a resource for language challenged teachers (English as a second language)? Board NominationsSuggestions for consideration by the Board Nominating Committee should be submitted this month to the Nominations Committee, c/o Dr. Mark George george@hartford.edu . In addition to teachers and parents, names of individuals with financial, organizational, fundraising and/or business skills are always welcome! Creating Learning Community Awards Nominations for 2010 Creating Learning Community award recipients are due December 31, 2009. Please consider those you know who have contributed significantly to the support of Dr. Suzuki’s ideas and the Suzuki community. Candidates for the award may be parents, teachers, friends of Suzuki, organizations, programs, etc.
More on submitting a CLC Award Nomination Conference A record number of session proposals have been submitted—164! Proposals include some great ideas on general and instrument-specific pedagogy, plus our five topical tracks: Group Classes, Meeting the Younger Teachers’ Needs, New Ideas for Experienced Teachers, Healthy Lifestyle/Healthy Attitude, and Working with Parents. Look for a list of sessions and presenters on the conference website early next year. 287 students have applied for masterclasses, preformed and non-preformed chamber group coaching, youth orchestra, and the bass, flute, and recorder groups. Applications for the Piano Concerto are due December 15! May 27-31, 2010 marks the SAA’s 14th Biennial Conference in Minneapolis, MN, at the Hilton Hotel and Convention Center. Be sure to save the dates for this special event! The theme for 2010 is TEAMWORK. Visit the Conference website for more information on the plans so far. |
